What is AI SEO?

Short answer

AI SEO has two meanings. Using AI to produce search content faster, under rules that keep it accurate. And structuring pages so AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews cite them. Good AI SEO does both at once, because the same plain, well sourced page ranks in Google and gets lifted into AI answers.

The phrase AI SEO gets used for two different things. Most agencies mean one or the other, and the useful version is both at once.

The two meanings

The first meaning is production. AI drafts the pages. A site can then publish far more useful content than a writing team can afford. Without rules, the output is generic and sometimes wrong.

The second meaning is distribution. Search is no longer only a list of links. Google shows AI Overviews and an AI Mode. People ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot directly. Each of those answers cites a small number of pages. AI SEO in this sense is making your page one of them.

The two meet on the page. Take a page that states a fact plainly, cites its source and sits in a site with depth on the topic. It ranks in Google. The same page is what an AI answer engine lifts.

Google started to show AI Overviews to everyone in 2024 and added AI Mode in 2025. Google describes how those features pick their sources in its AI features documentation. The short version is that the same helpful content guidance applies, and there is no special markup to buy.

At the same time, a growing share of buyers ask an AI assistant before they search at all. ChatGPT browses the web and cites pages. Perplexity cites on every answer. Those citations come from the page that answers the exact question best rather than from the biggest site.

Our own site shows the effect. In September 2026 Ahrefs counted Gridly pages in about 1,900 AI answers, including 258 Google AI Overviews, with a domain rating of 10.

What an AI SEO page looks like

The heading is the question a customer asks, in the words they use. The first two or three sentences answer it. The detail follows, with each fact tied to a source a reader can check. Frequently asked questions at the bottom cover the related phrasings. Structured data behind the page tells the machines what it is.

The sentences are short. Technical terms are defined the first time they appear. Nothing on the page reads as filler, because filler is what AI answer engines skip.

What AI SEO is not

It is not publishing a thousand near identical pages with the suburb name swapped. Google calls that scaled content abuse in its spam policies, and it is also useless to a reader.

It is not a plugin that rewrites your existing pages. It is not a guarantee either. Nobody controls Google or ChatGPT, and an agency that promises a position is selling something else.

How we do it

We write the ruleset first. We map the pillars and the clusters underneath them so no two pages compete. We build templates and, where public data exists, pages from that data. Then a daily loop drafts, checks and stages new pages for a person to approve. The full method is on our AI SEO agency page, and the Gridly case study shows what it produced.

Do you need it

If customers research before they buy from you, and they now ask AI assistants, then yes. If your site has ten pages and a contact form, the first job is the cluster of questions your customers ask. AI SEO is the cheapest way to build it. If you sell to three buyers a year who all know you, it is not worth the money. We will say so on the call.

Questions

Is AI SEO the same as using ChatGPT to write blog posts?

No. Pasting a prompt into ChatGPT and publishing the result is the fastest way to produce pages nobody reads. AI SEO is a system. A written ruleset, a map of which page targets which search, templates, a review step and measurement. AI does the drafting inside that system.

Does Google penalise AI written content?

Google says it rewards helpful content however it is produced. Its spam policy targets pages made at scale to game rankings, whatever wrote them. The test is whether a reader gets what they came for. A page that answers the question plainly and cites its sources passes that test.

What is an AI Overview?

An AI Overview is the AI written summary Google shows at the top of many results pages. It answers the question in a few sentences and links to the pages it drew from. Being one of those linked pages is the AI SEO result most businesses want.

How is AI SEO measured?

Two ways. Google Search Console shows impressions and clicks as before. Tools such as Ahrefs now count the AI answers that cite your pages. They split the count by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. Track both, because a page can be cited often and clicked rarely.
